Our brief history
Don and Kim Edwards have proudly operated Newmarket's oldest sign shop since 1983. Don began his journey in lettering at an Ontario sign shop back in 1979. Being self-taught meant he had to be a jack of all trades, mastering essential skills such as hand lettering for signs and vehicles, spray painting for backlit store signs, and woodworking to construct durable frames.
Eager to expand his expertise, Don self-learned advanced skills like airbrush painting for pictorials and lettering enhancement, gold leaf application for store windows and signs, screen printing for signs and textiles, pinstriping for cars and trucks, and sandblasting for cedar signs.
Knightworks soon gained recognition, providing expert advice and being featured in trade magazines across Canada and the U.S. For several years, Don taught airbrush techniques throughout the U.S. for a prominent trade magazine and led classes on sign design and vehicle graphics at various conferences and events.
In 1989, Knightworks embraced the computer cut revolution with the introduction of an advanced plotter in the sign industry. Initially, stick-on letters faced skepticism from customers who viewed them as a cheap alternative to hand lettering, but that perception changed. Soon after, a PC link was established, allowing for design on computer screens.
A few years later, digital printing emerged, but the high cost meant local shops had to wait for affordable printers. Our first vehicle wrap came years before it gained popularity and was mainly considered by corporate accounts due to its expense.
Today, our sign shop is transformed, featuring online ordering, faster printers and plotters, review sites, delivery networks, more efficient materials, and an array of sub-trades to expedite production.
Despite the significant changes in the industry, our core values remain unchanged. We design with the same passion as when we first started, believing that customers deserve respect in fulfilling their needs. We still feel excited when completing a project, hoping our clients share that enthusiasm.
